The Pelican Rapids football team recorded an impressive 7-3 record in 2021, finishing as District and Section runners-up, posting an undefeated home record and outscoring their opponents by an average of 12. 5 points per game.  For Head Coach Eli Beachy it was an excellent first year at the helm.  Beachy is back for a second years and will be assisted by Hayden Sturdevant, Cody Shaffer, Chris Hacker, Mitch VerDorn and Paul Sturdevant.

Returning letter winners included seniors Carter Johnson, Peyton Blakeway, Hunter Williams and Ian Fahje, juniors Timmy Guler, Justin Jacobson, Kaden Holt, Luke Sjolie, Jack Paulson, Jarret Stetz, Alex Tabery, Anthony Checco de Souza, Chris Laferriere and Connor Nelson, and sophomores Jack Kapenga, Mark Kapenga, Treyvon Benson, Channing Russman, Willem Pesch, Lucas VerDorn, Elias Valdovines, Cole Allmaras, Austin Kleinschmidt, Ramses Feria Rubio, Gage Treinen and Hazen Milbeck.

“The players have set very high expectations and goals for themselves this season,” reported Coach Beachy.  “The coaches feel those goals are realistic and achievable.  Our players have put in a tremendous amount of work into their bodies since last football season in the weight room.  You can expect to see a fiery, fast, and physical football team on Friday nights, that is determined to do something special this season.”

Speed and athleticism will be team strengths for the Vikings, along with versatility and depth at the skill positions.  Coach Beachy says this group is very coachable and has created a positive team environment.  As for team weaknesses, consistent vocal leadership and low numbers in the senior and freshman grades jump to the forefront.

“I am very happy with the progress this team has made since last season,” stated Beachy.  “Specifically in regards to their strength and commitment to the weight room.  These older boys have set a standard in the weight room that is being felt by the underclassmen as well as the seventh and eighth graders.  The commitment these kids have shown to becoming bigger and stronger this off season is exactly what we needed to prepare for the upcoming season.”

District champion OTC and Breckenridge will be the main challengers to the Vikings in their quest for a District championship, with defending champion Barnesville and Hawley being the top teams in Section 8AA.
