It was a memorable season for the 2021-22 Perham Yellowjackets girls basketball team and they capped it off with some postseason honors from the Heart O’ Lakes Conference. Perham head coach T.J. Super said the team exceeded people’s expectations but not their own. “We had a great summer of work and knew we had a great team coming in,” Super said. “We had many girls step up and fill in much needed roles. The cohesiveness that this team developed is what made this team great."

Four Yellowjackets were named All-Conference Members while another received the Most Valuable Player Award. Senior Sydney Anderson was named Most Valuable Player and HOL All-Conference for her efforts during the season. Anderson helped lead the Yellowjackets to an 11-1 conference mark and a 21-6 overall record. It was the most wins for the Yellowjackets since the 2009-10 season and first HOL title since the 2008-09 season. Anderson led the conference in scoring, averaging 15.8 points per game. She led the conference from the 3-point line as well. Anderson hit 35 of her 73 3-point attempts for a blistering 47.9 percent clip from beyond the arc. Anderson was second in the conference in field goal percentage at 52.7 percent and was third in the conference from the free throw line at 84.2 percent. Defensively, Anderson led the conference with 3.2 steals per game. “Anderson was amazing this year, leading the conference in nearly every statistical category,” Super said. “She had a lights out season, finishing as the fourth all-time leading scorer in Perham. Her leadership was her greatest quality, though, and has made a lasting impact on our program.”

Anderson was joined by a trio of her teammates on the all-conference team. Senior Greta Hillukka, Junior Olivia Pilgrim and Sophomore Willow Thiel earned all-conference honors as well. Hillukka averaged 9.7 points per game for the Yellowjackets, shot 77.8 percent from the free throw line, 38.9 percent from the 3-point line and 46.2 percent from the field for the Yellowjackets. She averaged 2.1 steals per game and dished out 2.2 assists per game for the Yellowjackets.

“Hillukka is such an intense player,” Super said. “She’s our defensive leader and is a knock down shooter. But, more than that, she’s a great leader and was a huge reason why we had so much success this year.” Pilgrim averaged 10.3 points per game for the Yellowjackets and was 36.4 percent from the 3-point line. Pilgrim tied for second in assists, averaging 3.4 assists per game during the conference season. She was 44.8 percent from the field as well during her junior campaign.

“Pilgrim stepped up into a big role this year,” Super said. “She is a great shooter and awesome at attacking the rim. She made us such a harder team to defend and really stepped up in big moments for us.”

It was a breakout season for Thiel. Thiel led the conference in rebounding, field goal percentage and was fifth in the conference in scoring. Thiel averaged 7.8 rebounds per game, was 52.8 percent from the field and averaged 12.8 points per game. She dished out 2.6 assists per game, ranking her sixth in the conference. “Thiel had such a great year and was really unstoppable at times,” Super said. “She has worked hard to become a phenomenal player.” As a team, the Yellowjackets led the conference in field goal percentage (47.8 percent), 3-point percentage (39.6 percent), assists (17.4 per game), steals (13.1 per game) and were second in rebounds per game (29.8) during the 2021-22 conference season.

The 2021-22 campaign was Super’s 10th season as head coach of the Yellowjackets. The head coach was honored by his peers and was named the Section 8AA Coach of the Year.
