The Ashby Lady Arrows were on the road to face the Benson Braves in the play-in game to start the South Section 6A tournament on Monday night. The Braves got off to a good start and at the half led the Arrows 24-12 and defeated the Arrows 56-35. The Arrows end their regular season with a record of 1-21 and tournament play 0-1.

“The first half of basketball was not kind to the Lady Arrows,” commented Head Coach Brenda Johnson. “We were cold from outside the lane, didn't handle the half court trapping zone press with composure, and got into early foul trouble that forced us to go to our bench early. Playing varsity basketball in a tournament setting is new to most of our team. The pressure and just knowing that if we lose you are done adds to the already overwhelming feeling these young players have had to face all season. I was very pleased at how the second half went. We could have given up and continued to play like it was already over, but they didn't and they haven't all season they just kept fighting through adversity.”

The loss ends the high school career for the Arrows lone senior, Celi Nelson, who is headed to Jamestown to play basketball and golf for the Jimmies.  Coach Johnson had high praise for her leader, “It's always hard to see a senior end their high school career. All you want as a coach is for them to be successful and walk off the court every night with a win. Celi Nelson ended her HS basketball career last night leading all scorers with 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. Celi has been double and triple teamed most of the season, but her resilience, determination, and unselfish teammates kept her going. She literally left it all on the floor this entire season.”

The Arrows two starting post players BrookeLinn and Chloe Finkelson were in early foul trouble, but Ivy Aufdenkamp and Sienna Williams, two 9th graders, answered the call and came off the bench to give the Arrows valuable minutes, Williams had 4 points, and Ivy grabbed 5 rebounds, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. Despite their minutes on the bench Chloe ended the night with 2 points and 5 rebounds and BrookeLinn had 1 point, 2 boards, 1 steal, and 1 block. Marisa Ludwig who has been consistently improving her game all season was the leading rebounder with 7, she also had 4 points, 2 steals, and 1 block.

Lucy Ohren, has been working hard all season to improve her game and help her team to the best of her ability may not put a lot of points on the board, but she touches the ball almost every defensive and offensive possession,” noted Coach Johnson. “Lucy finished the night with 3 D boards.  Another 9th grader, Jessi Schlundt, came off the bench and helped the Arrows by putting two points on the scoreboard. The contributions that these girls make in a game may not be in the statistical column, but what they have done to keep the GBB program going in Ashby outweighs any stat. They have given of themselves unselfishly, so that every little girl in APS will have the chance to be an ARROW and that's a big WIN, for our school and community.”
