The Ashby girls’ basketball team avenged a pre-Christmas loss to Ortonville with a 63-57 victory on Monday night in Ashby.  The Arrows took a slim 32-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.

“With under a minute to play we had only a three-point advantage, but this group of young ladies were able to come through by hitting free throws, and taking care of the ball at the end,” said Head Coach Brenda Johnson.  “This win was the best thing that could’ve happened to a team that has been working hard all season and being in a couple of close games but not being able to finish a game until tonight.”

The Arrows had six players in the scoring column, led by Celi Nelson with 37 points and 6 rebounds.  Marisa Ludwig had her first double-double with 13 points, 10 boards and 4 steals.  BrookeLinn Finkelson contributed 6 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots, Ashley Paulson had 4 points, 2 boards and 3 steals, Quynn Behrens and 3 rebounds and Chloe Finkelson grabbed 5 boards.  Lucy Ohren fouled out, but before doing so she had 2 points, 2 boards and 2 assists.

“Celi hit some big shots in the first half and knocked down free throw after free throw in the second half,” noted Coach Johnson.  “Marisa has a very quick step and used it to her advantage tonight.  She is not afraid to get into the middle of a scuffle and play aggressively around the net.  BrookeLinn played all but one minute of the game and worked so hard on both ends of the floor.  Quynn, Ashley, Chloe and Lucy all played great defense tonight.  They are the girls that may not be the leading scorers on the floor or pull down most of the rebounds, but they know their role and that is so important in a team sport.  This win was a total team effort.  We couldn’t have done it without all 11 players.  I’m so proud of these girls and their never give up attitude tonight.  They definitely wanted it more.”

The Arrows travel to Parkers Prairie on Tuesday night and play the Rothsay Tigers on Thursday in a pair of LEC matchups.
