Underwood build a 39-10 halftime lead on the way to a 62-25 Little Eight Conference girls’ basketball victory in Ashby.

“I was happy with how the girls rebounded and got very good looks in our offensive sets,” said Underwood Head Coach Brian Hovland.

Liz Lukken (16 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals), Zoey Swanson (10 points, 3 rebounds), Mo Bugbee (8 points, 3 steals), Mia Blaskowski (8 points, 3 rebounds), Ezrah Baker (7 points, 5 steals) and Kallyn Grove (4 points, 5 assists, 8 rebounds, 4 steals) all contributed to the win for the Rockets.

“The Rockets are well coached and have a strong inside-outside game,” stated Ashby Head Coach Brenda Johnson. “Any player can score on this well balanced team. Coach Hovland and Coach Jensen have a great program and feeder program.”

Ashby senior Celi Nelson had a game high 21 points.

“Offensively, we still need to look for our shots and not always go with the first option on offense,” added Coach Johnson. “Celi and BrookeLinn Finkelson had some great connections last night and the more times this happens the ball will start to drop. The Finkelson sisters (BrookeLinn and Kaitlyn) worked hard on the boards tonight and compiled 10 rebounds between them.  Neslon, Ivy Aufdenkamp, and Lucy Ohren showed they can compete down low against much taller players, also. The three had a combined 10 boards. We've cut down on our unforced errors, but against a strong team like Underwood they are able to capitalize on them.

“The Arrows were again plagued with illness, but this did not stop this young group of ladies from battling on and doing their best to adjust, which is nothing new to this team; they've been doing it since the season started,” said Johnson.  “Coach Mickeslon and I saw so many positive things from our team in this game. They went after the rebounds and fought relentlessly to the end. We are still getting used to each other offensively and our own capabilities which will continue to be a focus at practice. Their confidence on the floor is showing and learning how to handle adversity is not only making them better athletes, but better people.”

Underwood (14-3, 10-0 LEC) will host Battle Lake on Tuesday.

Ashby goes to Wheaton for a Saturday afternoon contest against the Warriors.
