The Ashby girls’ basketball team traveled to Verndale for a non-conference game against the Pirates on Monday night. The Pirates had a 10 point lead at halftime and went on to beat the Arrows 52-38.

Offensively, the Arrows had several opportunities to score around the basket, but were not able to convert these high percentage shots into points. “As a team the Arrows showed several good offensive possessions and defensive stops tonight,” commented Head Coach Brenda Johnson. “We are young and still learning so many aspects of the game that come naturally to veteran teams.”

The Arrows were led by Celi Nelson with 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals, BrookeLinn Finkelson had 3 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks, Marisa Ludwig had 3 points and 4 rebounds. “Marisa's presence on the floor gives us another option for a point guard, so Nelson doesn't have to handle the ball all the time,” said Coach Johnson.  Chloe Finkelson had 6 points, 11 rebounds, and a blocked shot, Ivy Aufdenkamp had 4 points on the night and really worked hard on defense. “Ivy's usually in the mix of things on defense whether she's jumping a passing lane or crashing the O boards,” noted Johnson. “Quynn Behrens, Lucy Ohren, and Ashley Paulson came off the bench to give the starters a chance to catch their breath or play for someone in foul trouble.

“The Arrows fought hard to the end tonight and are getting closer to playing a complete game. I know I've said it all season, but this group of young ladies are so courageous and continue to improve as the season has progressed.”

The Arrows will face the Rockets in a Little Eight Conference battle on Thursday and travel to Herman on Saturday to play a rescheduled game vs. the Wheaton/Herman-Norcross Warriors.
