Jackson Koehl had a big night for the Hancock boys’ basketball team as he hit five 3’s on the way to a game high 27 points to lead the Owls to a 65-50 win over Battle Lake.  Hancock was strong on the boards, outrebounding Battle Lake 45-24.  They also had sixteen assists on 24 made baskets, with Zachary Koehl distributing 5 dimes.

Hudson VerSteeg was also in double digits with 15 points.  Felix Sebastian had 8 points and Chase Evink finished with 6.  The Battlers held leading scorer Matt Thompson to just 6 points, however, they couldn’t control him on the boards as he grabbed a team high 16.  Zachary Koehl added 9 rebounds.

It was a back and forth first half with the Owls taking a 30-25 half time lead. The Owls came out and hit some shots to go on a 9-0 run to start the second half.

“This is the 3rd straight game the Battlers have come out of the locker room ice cold on the offensive end,” stated Battle Lake Head Coach Randy Dorn. “The boys responded nicely as they continued to battle and did not let the game get out of hand. Obviously Matt Thompson is a really nice player and if you want a chance to beat the Owls you need to make others step up and Jackson Koehl did just that hitting some big shots from outside the arc. Mason Dalluge and Jacob Radermacher played a great defensive game making Thompson work for any open look and limiting him to 1 shot. Sam Jossart also came off the bench for the Battlers to provide a great spark defensively and on the boards.”

Leaders for Battle Lake were Noah Mansker with 14, Drew Johnson with 10 and Jack Mekalson with 9.

Hancock (12-3) will play Renville County West on Saturday at Target Center.

Battle Lake (5-8) will take a three game losing streak into Ashby on Friday night for a Little Eight Conference contest.
