The Ashby girls’ basketball team saw their first action Friday night after the holidays and weather related cancellations vs. Parkers Prairie at Ashby in Little Eight Conference play.

The Panthers defeated the Arrows 58-28. After the first half of play the Arrows went into their locker room only down by 7 points, 30-23. “We were able to keep the Panthers within striking range the whole first half,” commented Ashby Head Coach Brenda Johnson. “Sometimes I wish there wasn't a halftime and tonight was one of those times. We came out flat and were unable to overcome the Panthers aggressive defensive play. As a team the Arrows only scored 5 second half points and gave the Panthers 24 offensive boards for the game to our 6. With that many offensive boards in Parker's favor they had more than one chance to score on their end. Regardless of the outcome it was good to be back playing. We have a young team and it's hard to emulate game-like situations in practice. These girls just need to play to learn.”

Senior Celi Nelson led all scorers with 23 points, 5 of them coming from beyond the arc, Nelson also had 6 rebounds. BrookeLinn Finkelson led the Arrows with 7 rebounds BrookeLinn and Chloe combined for 6 blocked shots.

“As a team we work hard and try our best to execute our game plan,” added Coach Johnson. “We are still waiting for the team to play two halves of basketball. We run out of gas in the second half and that carries over to our defense especially in our rebounding. This young group of players continue to work hard and do what is asked of them to the best of their ability.”

The Arrows play Frazee, Rothsay, and B-E next week all on the road.

No Parkers Prairie stats were reported.
