The West Central Area girls’ basketball team handed the Underwood Rockets their first loss of the season on Wednesday afternoon at the Minnesota National Bank Classic in Pelican Rapids, recording a 56-47 win.

Lexi Bright and Claire Stark paced the Knights with 15 and 14 points, respectively.  Kaitlyn Hansen made three 3’s and finished with 10 points, and Addison Staples contributed 9 points.  Staples had a team high 11 rebounds.  Bright added 6 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 5 rebounds and 4 deflections and Stark pulled down 6 rebounds while blocking two shots.

Leaders for Underwood were Mo Bugbee (14 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals), Liz Lukken (12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists), Ezrah Baker (8 points) and Zoey Swanson (6 points).

“We got off to a slow start down 0-7 but battled back and took a 30-20 lead into the locker room at halftime,” said Head Coach Brian Hovland of the Rockets.   “The second half we kind of fell apart on both ends of the floor.  Hand it too WCA as they took advantage of it and hit some big shots. In a game like this we know what we need to fix, and we need to have those issues fixed by tomorrow morning as we face a good LPA team at 11:00 am.”

WCA will face New York Mills in the championship game of the Valkyrie Division at 4:15pm Thursday.
