Battle Lake ran their winning streak to start the season to five games on Tuesday night with a 56-40 victory over Brandon-Evansville in a Little Eight Conference girls’ basketball matchup.

Grace VanErp had a huge, all-around game as she led all scorers with 28 points.  Morgan Malone also played a big role in the win by scoring 14 points, while Sophie Akerman added 8.

“Through the first half the game stayed relatively close as we held a 21-16 lead, however, we made a nice run in the second half and extended the lead to double digits and held that margin until the final buzzer,” said Battle Lake Head Coach David Marso.

Brandon-Evansville was led by Kaytlyn Pattrin (8 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists), Olivia Otto (7 points, 3 rebounds) and EmmaLee Brethorst (7 points, 3 steals).  Grace Otto pulled down 5 boards and chipped in with 4 points, and Sydney Schaefer contributed 5 points.

The Chargers shot just 27% (12-44) from the field, but they knocked down 16-of-23 (69%) free throws.

“It was a physical Little 8 Conference game tonight that had the Battlers make enough plays in the 2nd half to pull out the victory,” reported Brandon-Evansville Head Coach Zachary Traphagen. “We really struggled to put the ball in the hole tonight, but a lot of credit goes to Battle Lake with their ability to limit transition baskets and our dribble penetration. The effort was there, but unfortunately our execution wasn't there tonight. We will get back to work tomorrow, focus on having a great practice and head down to Graceville on Thursday to try and right the ship.”

Brandon-Evansville is now 2-3 on the season.

Battle Lake will play at Henning on Saturday at 1:30pm.
