The Ashby boys’ basketball team opened their season with a home game against the 3-0 Pelican Rapids Vikings on Monday night.  The Arrows held a slim 27-24 halftime lead but opened the second half on a 20-6 run to take control of the game on the way to a 61-41 victory.

Jacob Cook poured in a game high 24 points to lead the Arrows and Torin Olson added 15.  Carson Spangler knocked down three 3’s for 9 points and Hunter Norby scored 7.  Cook secured 12 rebounds to complete a double-double and Norby grabbed 9 boards.  The Arrows totaled 36 rebounds and shot just 21% (3/14) from behind the 3-point line.

“The team played with energy at the defensive end of the floor against the shorthanded Vikings,” said Ashby Head Coach John Holsten.  “It was a good start to the season, but there are several things that require improvement as we go through the schedule.”

Ian Fahje led the Vikings with 17, while Tanner Tollerud and Hunter Williams contributed 10 points apiece.

“We were able to hang in it for the first half tonight, but eventually Ashby pulled away in the second half and wore us down,” said Pelican Rapids Head Coach John Gullingsrud.  “We struggled to find any rhythm on offense and the turnovers and missed shots turned into quick transition points when we weren’t able to get back on defense.”

Ashby gets right back into action on Tuesday night as they host the Frazee Hornets in another non-conference contest.

Pelican Rapids will travel to Thief River Falls for a non-conference game.
