The M State men’s golf team finished in seventh place at the Jimmie Fall Invite held on Monday and Tuesday at Jamestown Country Club.  Jamestown (Orange) won the event with a two-day total of 601 and Minot State was second with a 623.  Jamestown (Black) was third with a 625, followed by Dickinson State (Blue) at 627, North Central with a 634, Alexandria Tech with a 640, M State with a 668, Dickinson State (Gray) 673 and Valley City State with a 675.

The Spartans shot a score of 336 on day one and a 332 on day two.  Hunter Burnside led the Spartan men with a two day total of 156 (79-77) and finished tied for eleventh in the 50 player men’s field.  Joel Quam shot a 167 (82-85), Grant Inniger had a 171 (88-83), Mikey Vall a 176 (87-89) and Jordan Caspers a 193 (106-87).  Medalist honors went to Tate Olson of Jamestown with a 140 (70-70).

“We enjoyed a very nice trip to get our season started in Jamestown,” said Head Coach Jason Retzlaff.  “It will be the deepest field we will see all year for both our men and women against comprised of primarily 4-year scholarship schools.  We got off to a very slow start on day one as there were some nerves to get through with our first tourney of the season.  We seemed to settle in late Sunday and played better on Monday.  Hunter Burnside was an anchor for our men.  After starting the tournament six-over through five holes, he played the last 31 holes in 6-over.  His putter was very impressive.”

Audra Ewan led the Spartan women on day two with a score of 93 and finished with a two-day total of 198.  Sarah Butler shot a 245 (119-126).  Minot State won the women’s side with a two-day score of 659 (326-333).  Anya Ross was the women’s medalist with a 159 (78-81).

“Audra Ewan had a very nice second round to lead us on the women’s side,” said Retzlaff.  “The course was difficult and long and after a slow start she made some very nice adjustments.  It was great to see her make par on 5 of her last 10 holes.  Overall it was a fun way to start the season and this experience will certainly help us improve.”
