The Hillcrest Lutheran Academy Boys Soccer team was defeated by St. Johns Prep by the score of 2-1 in their season opener on Monday.  With the game tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation, the teams played two five minute overtime periods.  St. Johns scored with 30 seconds remaining in the second period to win the match.

St. Johns scored first, 16 minutes into the first half off a corner kick into the box.  Johnnies, Logan Richter was able to get a touch on the ball and beat Comet’s keeper Steffen Synnevaag at the near post.  Midway through the second half, Comet midfielder, Simon Kleven, was taken down in the box and awarded a PK.  Comet, outside midfielder, Entre Okland, scored with a nice PK shot inside the left post tying the game and sending it into OT.  The Comets had chances in OT, but, on their last attack, got too far forward.  The Johnnies countered and got the ball behind the Comet midfielders.  A Comet miscue on defense, with a clear to the middle of the field, led to the Jonnies’ goal in the final seconds.

Synnevaag ended the night in goal with 9 stops on the Comet net.  The Comets had several good build up attacks, but were able only to achieve 5 shots on goal.

“It was a disappointing loss, but, St. Johns wanted the win much more than the Comets today and it showed in the play and end result,” commented Hillcrest Head Coach Rod Jensen.  “We are very young, and the mistakes made on the field today are correctable.  Our team will learn from our mistakes and improve.”

The Comets face off against the Detroit Lakes Lakers on Thursday in DL at 7:00pm.
