The top-seeded team in the North half of Section 6A, the Henning Hornets, exploded for 47 first half points on Wednesday night, while holding Hillcrest to just 9 points at the half.  The Hornets went on to record a 71-32 win over the Comets in the playin round of the tournament.

“We played a great first half on both ends of the court, great defense, shared the ball and got good looks on offense,” stated Henning Head Coach Mike Hepola.

Ellie Dague poured in 25 points to lead the Hornets.  Megan Weber and Kylie Frederick added 10 points apiece and Ally Hart contributed 9.

Hillcrest was led by Mackenzie Foss with 11 points and 3 steals.  Madi Ballweg and Regan Wiertzema added 8 and 7 points, respectively.  Wiertzema also had a team high 7 rebounds.  Ella Knutson added 4 points and 5 boards, and Madi Foss grabbed 5 rebounds.

“I’m proud of the way the girls played tonight,” said Head Coach Hannah Clark of Hillcrest.  “They went up against a really good Henning team.  The girls never gave up and played hard until the final buzzer.  A big thanks to our seniors, Mackenzie Foss, Audra Ewan, and Cassy Twedt.  They have done a great job leading this team this year and we are sure going to miss them!  They have been great basketball players for us, but even more importantly, they’ve set great examples of what it means to be a great teammate.”

Henning (18-1) will host Mahnomen-Waubun (13-6) in the quarterfinal round of the Section 6A playoffs at 7:00pm Friday.

Hillcrest ends the season with 6 wins and 14 losses.
