The Hillcrest boys’ basketball team hosted Rothsay in a Little Eight Conference contest on Thursday night with the Comets coming out on top by the score of 66-52.

“Our whole game was flat early,” commented Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Garvin. “Our offensive movement was sluggish. Our defensive grit was faint. Rothsay played tough and intense and played with good momentum on the offensive end. We thought we let things flow too easily for them. The locker room talk from the boys was all energy. I thought they played the second half with a little more of the intensity that they are capable of consistently playing with. Because we lacked that early, I think we overplayed a bit more in the second half, but I think they'd all rather THAT than what they put forth in the first half.”

Micah Foss led the Comets with 19 points, making 7-of-9 from the free throw line.  He also had a team high 9 assists and 5 steals.  Brothers Sam Brumfield and Noah Brumfield added 12 and 11 points, respectively.  Zeke Ihrke finished with 8 rebounds and 3 assists and 3  Hillcrest shot 48% (23-48) from the field and 38% (8-21) from 3-point land.

Yuchan Ha (8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) had a really nice game for us,” noted Coach Garvin. “Made a couple big threes, had a few great defensive plays in passing lanes and some BIG rebounds. Zeke would tell you he was disappointed in his performance tonight, but his rebounding and perimeter defense was beautiful to watch. Evan Olstad and Noah had some BIG moments for us off the bench. Both hit some timely 3s and their individual defense continues to improve. It's fun to watch the progress they experience even at this part of the season!”

A highlight from tonight was Rothsay Junior Tanner Heier scored his 1,000 career point.

“I thought we competed really well for the majority of the game.  We struggled for a short stretch I. The second half where they were able to extend their lead and we were not able to get back within striking distance”.  - Head coach Taylor Fuhs

Tanner Heier paced the Tigers with 18 points and Colby Larson finished with 10.  Rothsay made 48.6% (17-35) of their field goal attempts and buried 15-of-21 free throws.

Hillcrest (11-5) has won 9-of-10 games heading into their final regular season game on Saturday at 5:15pm at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy against the West Central Area Knights.

Rothsay ends the regular season with a record of 8 wins and 10 losses.
