The Hillcrest girls’ basketball team hosted Ashby in a Little Eight Conference matchup on Thursday night with the Comets coming out on top, 68-53 on their Senior Night.

“This was a great team win for us,” commented Hillcrest Head Coach Hannah Clark. “Our ball movement was great and everyone was getting involved on the offensive end. Our guards did a good job of attacking the rim. They were poised in the paint and were able to make the right reads on whether to shoot or kick it out. Mackenzie Foss had another good night scoring 23 and we had 3 others in double figures (Madi Ballweg 13, Ella Knutson 12, Madi Foss 11). Defensively, our pressure forced a lot of turnovers that led to a lot of good looks for us. It was fun to be able to get the 'W' on our senior night. All 5 of our seniors got to get into the game and play together one final time on our home court.”

Madi Foss pulled down a team high 8 rebounds and also led the team with 6 assists.  Cassy Twedt contributed 5 points and 5 rebounds, and Audra Ewan added 4 points.

Celi Nelson (20 pts, 10 Rebounds, 3 Assists), Ava Ellingson (15 pts), and Cailey Schlosser (5 Assists) led the Arrows.

“After our time off and coming out and not having our best team effort on Tuesday night, I was really nervous coming into this one,” said Ashby Head Coach Kip Nelson.  “But honestly, we really came out and competed.  Hillcrest went on a run at the end of the first half and we could not recover.  But we kept competing, we hit shots, give Hillcrest credit, they just happened to hit a few more.  We need to find a way to keep teams off the free throw line and take care of the ball better.  But with the break we had, I am happy the way the girls played.”

Hillcrest (4-11) will play another Little Eight Conference game in Underwood on Friday night.

Ashby (3-10) will host Brandon-Evansville on Saturday night.
