WCA Girls Post 54-50 Win in Wheaton

The West Central Area Lady Knights traveled to Wheaton on Friday night to face the Warriors in a conference game. The game started out back and forth throughout the first few minutes. The Lady Knights would gain momentum and lead by 9 points. Then the Warriors battled back and tied the game at 29, but a late 3 pointer for the Knights gave them the 3 point advantage at halftime 32-29. The second half had 5 lead changes and the Warriors had a 4 point advantage with nearly 8 minutes to play. The Lady Knights rallied back and finished the game on a 8 to 4 run to seal a 54-40 victory.

The Lady Knights were led by Lexi Bright with 32 points, 8 steals, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a block. Sydney Ulrich had 9 points, 2 rebounds and a steal. Claire Stark contributed 5 points, 4 rebounds and a steal. Kennedy Ulrich had 4 points and 2 rebounds on the night. Elizabeth Rustan had 2 points, 7 steals, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Brynn Fernholz had 2 points, 1 steal and 1 rebound. Brooke Anderson had 2 rebounds and an assist. Kaitlyn Hansen had 3 rebounds and an assist. Halle Foslien had 2 rebounds. Kaitlyn Hansen had 3 rebounds.

“Tonight we overcame a sluggish performance to eke out a win,” Coach Eric Schoenbauer stated. He concluded with, “Wheaton played extremely well and probably deserved to win, but our defense came up huge in the last 5 minutes. I’m not sure if Elizabeth could have played any better in that stretch, because her defense was phenomenal during that span.”

West Central Area (2-1) will play at Hancock Thursday night.

Wheaton/Herman-Norcross (2-2) is in Graceville Friday for a conference matchup with CGB.
