Hillcrest traveled to New York Mills as the number five seed in the North half of Section 6A and the Comets were able to pull off the upset of the fourth-seeded Eagles, posting a 60-50 win on Thursday night.

“Our guys played a tremendous game tonight from start to finish,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Gregg Preston. “Defensively, Nick Foss and Gabriel Preston set the tone containing the penetrating drive to the basket of the Mills guards. Sander Frustol played with intensity, made great decisions and was a dominant force in the paint pulling down 10 boards, scoring 22 and defending extremely effectively in the post. Of Sander's 22 points, 18 of them came in the second half. Thomas Zwiers 10 first half points got us on the board early and led us to a double digit first half lead that we did not relinquish. Micah Foss nailed two important three point baskets midway through the second half. Sander Frustol and Gabriel Preston finished the last few minutes making 7 of 9 from the free throw line to secure a very well played game.

The Eagles perimeter players were quick and caused problems for our ball reversal and defended our guards well. What a great win for us.”

The Comets shot 47% (22-47) and assisted on 16 of their 22 made field goals.  Preston led with 4 assists, while Nick Foss had 3 assists and 3 steals. Logan Disabella, Micah Foss and Sander Frustol each had 3 assists on the night.  In addition to Frustol’s 10 rebounds, Micah Foss pulled down 8 and Preston added 6.

Hillcrest will now face the top seed in the North, Henning, at 11:00am Saturday at Concordia College in Moorhead.
