Trojans overtake Knights down the stretch

The West Central Area Knights traveled to Ortonville and held a 52-51 lead with six minutes remaining but Ortonville made a couple of key plays in the final minutes and secured the game with free throws down the stretch to defeat the Knights 70-61.

“Ortonville’s experienced seniors made some key plays and steals down the stretch.  Same story for us.  We played an exceptional game in every area except for having some costly turnovers down the stretch,” said Knight Coach Kraig Hunter.

Both teams shot 47% from the field with the Knights hitting 21-45 shots and the Trojans 23-49.  From 3-point land the Knights hit at a 41% clip hitting 9-22 and Ortonville only hit 4-12.  Both teams grabbed 28 rebounds. 

The difference was in the turnover department with the Trojans only turning it over 6 times and the Knights 16. 

The Trojans hit 20-28 free throws for 71% and the Knights 8-9 for 89%. 

Leaders for the Knights were Teigen Moritz with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists; Gage Staples had 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists; Jacob Bright had 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists; Jack VanKempen had 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists; Grant Beuckens had 6 points, 6 assists, and 2 rebounds; and Tate Christenson had 5 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist.  Gavin Paulson contributed 2 assists and 1 steal, Blake Koloski 1 assist and 2 steals; and Brady Reeve had 1 rebound.

Scoring for the Trojans were Tyson Powell with 20 points, Zach Kuchenmeister with 13, DeVontae Edwards with 12, Pete Treinen with 9, Mitch Meyer with 9, and Leo Zepeda with 7.

West Central Area (12-7) will host Brandon-Evansville on Thursday night and then travel to Hancock Saturday afternoon for a 3:30pm contest.
