A three goal outburst in the second period, including a pair of power play goals, lifted the Fergus Falls girls hockey team to the Section 6A championship with a 3-1 victory over Alexandria on Thursday night in Willmar.

The Otters received outstanding goaltending from senior Jadyn McKeever who stopped 32 shots, sixteen of them in a scoreless third period.

Alexandria scored the first goal of the night at 8:23 of the opening period when McKenna Ellingson scored from Riley Nyberg

An even strength goal by Marilyn Karsnia at 1:51 of the second period tied the game. Maddie Hulter assisted on the goal. Ellie Andersen scored both power play goals for the Otters, the first at 5:39 was assisted by Chloe Nelson and the second at 9:58 was setup by Hallie Sheridan and Sophie Rausch

"It was their time, the leadership took over," said Head Coach Tim Lill of the Otters.  "All I had to do was watch."

Fergus Falls (21-6) has set a new team record for wins in a season and will be returning to the Class A State Girls Hockey Tournament for the first time since 2009. They will open play on Wednesday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Seeding will be announced this weekend.

Earlier this week the Otters were informed that their 3.855 cumulative team grade point average is the best among Section 6A teams, making them Section 6A Academic Champions.
