M State made 23-of-24 free throws on Wednesday night in their 73-71 Men’s Basketball victory over St. Cloud Community and Technical College. The win in front of the home crowd in Fergus Falls brought the Spartan Men to .500 on the season with an overall record of 9 wins and 9 losses. They are now 2-3 against MCAC Southern Division teams and 8-1 on their home floor.

M State made 42% (21-50) of their field goal attempts and had four players reach double figures in the game, led by Austin Miller with 17 and TJ Martin with 15. Kyler Newman contributed 14 points off the bench and Martin LaFond chipped in with 11 points. Samuel Priem just missed double digits, finishing with 9 points. Martin completed a double-double by snaring 10 rebounds and Miller added 9 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals. Aaron Solberg had 5 points and 8 rebounds.

With the Spartans trailing 71-68 Kyler Newman hit a deep 3-point shot to tie the game.  The Spartans then came up with a defensive stop with 20 seconds remaining in regulation time.  After a timeout M State executed a back door play where Martin delivered a pass to Miller who was fouled.  Austin was down on the play and the trainer went out to attend him, necessitating his leaving the game for a sub.  The opposing coach then got to choose a Spartan player to shoot the free throws that were awarded to Miller.  He chose Newman, who knocked down both shots to give the Spartans a two point lead.  The Spartans committed a foul on the rebound of a missed shot with one-tenth of a second left and the Cyclones player missed both free throws, giving the Spartans the victory.

The Cyclones were led by Eric Racine with 19 points off the bench. Paul Coleman came through with 15 bench points. Taye Carter and Dillon Haiderfinished with 12 and 10 points, respectively. St. Cloud made 42% (27-64) of their shots from the floor and connected on 10-of-17 free throws on the night. Carter had a team high 7 rebounds, while Coleman added 3 assists and 2 steals.

M State has a 3:00pm game against Rochester on Saturday in Fergus Falls.
