Spartan Men Lose at Riverland

The M State Men’s basketball team traveled to Austin on Saturday for a MCAC Southern Division matchup with Riverland Community College. M State trailed 37-33 at the half and fell to the home team 84-75, dropping to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in division play.

The Spartans shot the ball at a 60% clip from 3-point range, making 18-of-30 from beyond the arc. They hit 48% (26-54) of their overall field goal attempts, however, Riverland dominated the rebounding game, 45-26.

Samel Priem made 9-of-14 treys and led M State with 29 points, while distributing 4 assists. Kyler Newman was 6-for-9 from the floor, including 5-for-7 on 3’s, finishing with 17 points. Alenda Alemadi had 11 and 4 assists, and Martin LaFond added 10 points and 5 rebounds.

Riverland shot 44.6% (29-65) from the field and 37.5% (9-24) from 3-point range. They were led by 24 points from Kwantez Simmons on 10-of-14 shooting. Simmons completed his double-double with 12 rebounds. Deandre Andersonscored 17 points and dished out 4 assists, Terrell Smith contributed 12 points and Deandre Raggs finished with 6 points and 10 boards. Izzy Holmes, Jr., had 12 points off the bench.

M State will host St. Cloud Community and Technical College on Wednesday night in Fergus Falls.
