Pelican Rapids guard Jayden Rutherford led the way with 18 points as the Vikings beat the Battle Lake Battlers 70-66 in overtime in a game played at Concordia College on Saturday night.

The Vikings led 33-25 at the half and the score was knotted at 58 at the end of regulation. Other leading scorers for Pelican Rapids were Eli Sytsma with 14 points and Hayden Christenson with 12.

“We had a ten point lead with five minutes to go but we just weren’t able to hold it down the stretch as Battle Lake made some big shots to send it to overtime,” head coach John Gullingsrud stated. “We hit a couple of threes to start overtime which was big for our confidence after squandering the lead in regulation, and we made enough free throws to hang on for the win.”

Battle Lake got 18 points apiece from Riley Leabo and Brady Scholten, and Eli Carlson had 14.

“We were down eight at half, played an up and down second half, but fought back and came together to make it a game,” said Battle Lake Head Coach CJ Peeters. “We still struggle to execute but we learned a lot tonight.”

Battle Lake fell to 2-7 overall while Pelican Rapids improved their record to 4-5.
