Lady Spartans Win at Home

The M State lady Spartans got off to a fast start on Friday night as they took a 22-4 lead after one quarter of play against Mesabi Range in Fergus Falls. The Spartans led 35-26 at the half, increased their lead to 18 points at 56-38 after three quarters and went on to record a 68-54 victory in their return from their Christmas break.

"We started the game with a lot of fire and energy, outscoring Mesabi 22-4 in the first quarter," commented Spartan Head Coach Janice Hendrickson.  "Our defense did a great job down the stretch, holding them to 54 points.  This is an area we need to continually improve as we look to open our conference play next week."

Leaders for M State were Taylin Schleicher (19 points, 4 rebounds), Sydney Hovland (14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists), Olivia Winfrey (10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals), Kassandra Algarate (8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals) and Alexa Mortenson (6 points, 6 assists, 3 steals). Amanda Nelson grabbed six rebounds off the bench and Megan Dreger contributed 5 points and 4 boards. M State shot 41% (25-61) from the field.

Mesabi Range hit 35.7% (20-56) from the floor and had 22 turnovers on the night. They were led by Patty Overbye with 14 points and Makenzey Goerdt with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Tori Johnson scored 8 points off the bench and Shawna Wiese added 7 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

M State (5-7) will host Itasca at 3:00pm Saturday.
