The Fergus Falls girls hockey team scored five goals on Friday afternoon in their 5-3 win over Blaine at the Mid-Winter Border Battle in the Twin Cities. The win puts the Otters in the championship game on Saturday against Forest Lake.

Blaine took a 2-0 lead on goals by Ramsey Parent and Dani Brunette with Kayla Blesi and Brielle Fussy assisting on Parent’s goal, while Brunette’s goal was unassisted. An unassisted tally by Vivian Karsnia with 1:55 left in the opening period cut the Blaine lead in half.

At 11:51 of the second period Piper Andrews scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 2-2. Karsnia’s second goal of the day was setup by Sophie Rausch and gave the Otters a 3-2 lead with 4:05 remaining in the middle stanza. With 2:02 to play in the period Parent scored from Fussy and Brunette, tying the game at 3-3.

The Otters got the go-ahead goal with 3:20 left in the final period when Andres assisted on a goal by Maddie Hulter. Rausch finished off the scoring with an empty net goal from Ellie Andersen with just 21 seconds left in the game.

“All three lines scored again tonight,” reported Fergus Falls Head Coach Tim Lill. “That’s what it takes to compete with the bigger schools. The girls fore-checked with precision and cut the passing lanes which forced numerous turnovers. That’s a product of 100% effort and total buy in.”

Mady Eklund made 20 saves and the Otters put 34 shots on goal.

The Otters are 11-4 on the season.
