Spartan Men Come Up Short Against Rainy River

The M State Men’s Basketball team enters the Christmas break off an 87-80 loss to Rainy River on Saturday at the Central Lakes Classic Invitational in Brainerd. Rainy River held a 39-37 lead at the half and outscored the Spartans 48-43 over the final twenty minutes. 

Greg Garber (24 points, 9-10 FG), Trey Jones (18 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals), and Cedrick Harris (7 points, 13 rebounds) led the Voyageurs, who shot 44.4% (32-72) from the field. Rainy River also had 27 bench points, led by Brandon Alcide with 9. The Voyageurs took excellent care of the ball with only 8 turnovers on the day. 

Samuel Priem led the Spartans with 26 points and was joined in double figures by Aaron Solberg (15) and Austin Miller (12). M State shot 43.3% (26-60) from the field and made 36.4% (12-33) of their three point field goals. Solberg and Miller led the team with 8 and 7 rebounds, respectively. Miller dished out 6 assists and TJ Martin added 8 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. The Spartans assisted on 20 of their 26 made field goals. 

M State (5-6) will be off until Friday, January 4, when they host Mesabi Range in the opening round of the Spartan Classic in Fergus Falls.
