Otter Boys Settle for 4-4 Tie in Willmar

The Fergus Falls boys hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Willmar on Thursday night, but fell behind 4-3 with just over six minutes left in the game. That set the stage for the Otters to score the tying goal with just five seconds left, forcing overtime. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the extra period, as the game ended in a 4-4 tie. 

Mike DeBrito got the Otters on the board at 5:12 of the opening period, assisted by Isaac Young. DeBrito made it 2-0 at 14:28 when he converted a pass from Ian Richards. Isaac then scored from his brother, Declan Young, at 2:13 of the second period as the Otters took a 3-0 lead. Willmar scored three second period goals to pull even with the Otters. Tanner Bauman scored from Asaiah Smith at 6:52 and the Cardinals scored two goals in less than a minute late in the period with Smith scoring from Adam DeJong at 15:24 and Ashton Gregory scoring from Devin Turrubiates and Eldridge DeKraai at 16:21. 

DeKraai put Willmar in the lead at 10:59 of the third, assisted by DeJong. Declan Young then dug the puck out of the corner, centered a pass to Isaac Young, and Isaac put the puck in the net to tie the game force the overtime. 

Ian Stumbo stopped 12 of the sixteen shots he faced, while Fergus Falls put 37 shots on the Willmar net. 

Fergus Falls (1-3-1) will host River Lakes on Friday, December 14.
