Ada-Borup's Jared Brainard led all scorers with 14 points as the Cougars beat Pelican Rapids 54-49 in a season opening boys basketball game on the Vikings home court Friday night.

After a back and forth first half, both teams headed to the locker room with the score tied up at 27 apiece. The Vikings were able to take an 11 point lead midway through the second half, but Ada-Borup finished the game with a 20-4 run to record the victory. Tommy Stewart was also in double figures for the Cougars with 13 points, while Pelican Rapids was led by McHale Korf’s 13 points and Eli Sytsmaadded 9.

“You could definitely tell that this was an early season game for both teams as it was difficult for both of us to establish an offensive flow,” head coach John Gullingsrud stated. “Our guys did a nice job coming out of halftime to build that 11 point lead, but our execution down the stretch on both ends of the floor really showed our inexperience right now as we made numerous mistakes that you cannot do and still expect to win the game. Turnovers, missed free throws, and defensive rebounding hurt us throughout the game but really stood out when the Cougars made their run late in the game.”

The Vikings will travel to Rothsay for their next game on Thursday, December 6.
