Spartan Men Ride Fast Start to Victory Over Vermilion

The M State Men’s basketball team jumped out to a 24-3 start on Friday night on the way to an 85-71 home court victory over Vermilion Community College. The Spartans led the entire game. Vermilion got to within two points at 61-59 with nine minutes to go in the game.

 

"Great second half defense and great poise by our players to withstand a challenging comeback by Vermilion and then we were able to take care of the basketball late to seal the game,” said M State Head Coach Shawn Sorenson. “More great support from our Spartan fans and one more game tomorrow versus Mesabi is an opportunity to finish off an important week for our team." 

Austin Miller led the way again with 28 points and 10 rebounds. TJ Martin added 16 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. The Spartans received huge bench play from Alend Alemadi who contributed 16 points. Samuel Priem came through with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. 

“Overall, our defense and rebounding sealed the win for us,” added Sorenson.

The Spartans shot 44.8% (26-58) from the field and made 36.4% (12-33) of their three’s, while making 21-of-28 free throws.

Maurice Carter led the Ironmen with 17 points off the bench. Curtis Bell had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Reggie Rogers finished with 7 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists.
