Ian Stumbo recorded his first varsity win in net, making 18 saves.
Aaron Shelstad got the Otters on the board first, scoring at 7:43 from Colton Partain and Mason Hoffman. Sauk Rapids-Rice tied the game on a Mason Wiebusch game, setup by Daymin Dodge at 8:25.
The Storm took a 2-1 lead at 1:26 of the second period when Chase Christensenscored from Brandon Bokelman. Matthew Niblock tied the game at 2-2 when he scored his first varsity goal, assisted by Partain.
An unassisted goal by Bokelman at 1:54 of the third gave the home team a 3-2 lead. Declan Young’s unassisted goal at 2:31 pulled the Otters even. At 5:29 Hayden Shol scored from Niblock and Logan Schake to put the Otters back on top, 4-3. Ian Richards scored from Cole Zierden and Shelstad at 7:18, giving the Otters an insurance goal and a 5-3 lead. Bokelman scored his second goal of the night, assisted by Ben Sikes, at 10:02 of the third period, ending the scoring.
“We battled all night and it was a back-and-forth game,” said Head Coach Mike Donaghue. “Ian Stumbo came up with some big saves down the stretch on the way to his first varsity win.”
Fergus Falls (1-2) will play at Brainerd on Tuesday night.
