The Battle Lake girls basketball team recorded a thrilling 56-55 win over Wheaton/Herman-Norcross on Thursday night.

The Battlers jumped out right away with a three pointer from Hannah Scherr on the opening possession. She went on to score 11 in the half with three makes from behind the arc. Battle Lake led 27-21 at halftime.

Brylie Schultz of the Warriors had a monster second half scoring 15 of her 17 points in the period, but Battle Lake was able to hold onto the lead. Freshman Grace VanErp also caught fire late in the second half for the Battlers scoring 14 of her 19 points over the final eighteen minutes. With less than 20 seconds to play Battle Lake lost the lead for the first time all night as Maycee Tolifson scored and converted her foul shot to give the Warriors a one point lead. With seconds to go in the game VanErp found Scherr in the middle of the court and she proceeded to drive in the lane with seconds on the clock and scored for the one point lead. Tolifson’s shot came up short on the other end and the Battlers won 56-55.

“I couldn’t have been more proud of how the girls stepped up with a short bench tonight,” said Battle Lake Head Coach David Marso. “Shots were falling in the first half, but we really had to grind it out in the second. Credit the girls for staying positive throughout.”

Battle Lake (1-1) will play at Ashby on Tuesday night in their Little Eight Conference opener.
