Elora Passa scored 18 points to lead the Barnesville girls basketball team to a 50-44 home court victory over Battle Lake on Tuesday night.

Claire Meyer added 9 points for the home team.

"It was a typical first game and we have many things to work on," said Barnesville Head Coach Ryan Bomstad.  "This group has been fun to work with so far and I know we will come to practice and work on the things we need to fix. A basketball season is a marathon and not a sprint so we will continue to build off our positives and try to avoid the negatives.  Elora was outstanding tonight on both ends of the floor.  It was fun to watch all the new faces out on the floor and to see the process they go through to get acclimated to the game.  The girls did a tremendous job on the defensive boards tonight.  Claire played well and Lauren Halverson came in and gave us really good minutes and energy.  We were able to get eight players in the game with at least eleven minutes on the court which is a positive."

Battle Lake leaders were Allison Marso with 12 points, Makenna Tysdal with 9 points and Hannah Scherr with 7 points.

"We played a nice game tonight and had our chances, but came up a little short," commented Battle Lake Head Coach David Marso.  "We had some trouble scoring in the first half, making only five field goals and scoring a total of 14 points, while the Trojans put up 29 behind 9 from Passa.  We started hitting some shots in the second half and then converted seven 3-point baskets in that period.  We outscored the Trojans 30-21 in the half, but came up short at the end.  We had some chances late to make a move, but a couple of late shots didn't fall.  I was very pleased with our performance tonight, considering it was the first game of the season."

Battle Lake will open their home season on Thursday against Wheaton/Herman-Norcross.  Barnesville will host Park Rapids Area on Thursday night.

"Marso is a really good player for them and she made some tough shots in the second half," noted Coach Bomstad.  "Thursday night will be another tough test as Park Rapids comes to town.  They are big, physical and very talented.  They are predicted in the top five of Section 8AA and I know our players will be excited for the opportunity to play them."
