Snowy conditions were featured in an opening round playoff clash between conference foes Pelican Rapids and Detroit Lakes on Thursday. The match pitted the top rated offense in the Section, the Vikings, against the physicality and defense of the Lakers.

However, it was the Lakers offense who struck when Cole Metalak intercepted a miss-hit goal kick and drove it into the upper corner of the net to put the Lakers ahead 1-0. In the 33rd minute, the Vikings completed a nice build-up of play when Alfredo Centeno found Alan Villagomez moving down the right side and Villagomez was able to chip the goal keeper to even the score.

Less than a minute later, the Vikings gave up a goal on a free kick when Landon Mackner was left unmarked and found a loose ball to put in the net to put the Lakers ahead 2-1. In the 40th minute, the Lakers were awarded a free kick again just outside the Vikings' box and again Laker Jackson Carlblom was left unmarked and his shot ricocheted off the post and into the back of the net putting the Lakers up 3-1 going into the half.

In the 2nd half, the Vikings found themselves in a further deepening hole when Farhan Omar was issued a red-card for dissent, reducing the Vikings to 10 men with 27 minutes to play. The Vikings however continued to maintain possession and have opportunities and with 10 minutes to play, Abdinasir Mohamed was fouled hard inside the box giving the Vikings a penalty kick. Oscar Diaz converted the kick bringing the score to 3-2.

The final 10 minutes were played at a frenetic pace and the Vikings had numerous scoring opportunities but could not convert any of those chances into game tying goals.

The Vikings finish the season 8-4-2 while the Lakers move onto the second round to face Bemidji
