Nuggets Use Explosive Offense to Top Cowboys 56-27

The Hawley Nuggets followed a 21 point second quarter with 21 points in the third quarter of their Heart O’ Lakes Conference home game with Breckenridge on Friday night, leading the Nuggets to a 56-27 victory over the Cowboys.

 

Hawley scored the only touchdown of the first quarter on a two yard run by Trayton Cossette. The extra point kick by Mason Klevgaard put the Nuggets in front 7-0. The Nuggets extended the lead to 14-0 on a 27 yard TD pass from Jake Vetter to Cossette and second PAT kick by Klevgaard. Hunter Feigum got Breckenridge on the board with a 75 yard kick-off return. Charles Boldingh added the extra point to cut the Hawley lead to 14-7. The Cowboys then scored on a 55 yard punt return by Caden McGough, pulling to within one point at 14-13 as the extra point was missed. Vetter’s 10 yard TD pass to Noah Glad and Klevgaard third PAT kick increased the Nuggets lead to 21-13 and the Nuggets made it 28-13 at the half when Cossette scored on a 6 yard run and Klevgaard converted the kick. 

In the third quarter Cossette scored on a 7 yard run and Klevgaard booted the PAT making it 35-13. Breckenridge answered on a 13 yard run by McGough to trim the Hawley lead to 35-19 after the missed two-point try. Vetter then hooked up with Hunter Magnuson on a 25 yard TD pass and Klevgaard made the score 42-19 with the PAT. McGough scored on a 7 yard run and ran in the two-point conversion as well as the Cowboys pulled to within fifteen at 42-27. Hawley completed the third quarter scoring with a one yard TD run by Vetter and an extra point kick by Klevgaard. 

The only touchdown of the fourth quarter was on a 22 yard pass play from Vetter to Chase Libak and another PAT kick by Klevgaard who finished the night 8-for-8. 

Breckenridge was led by McGough who ran for 113 yards on 12 attempts. Feigum had 29 yards on 8 carries and Daniel Erlandson ran for 27 yards on 5 rushes. Jack Aigner had eight tackles to lead the defensive effort. 

For Hawley, Vetter completed 9-of-18 passes for 221 yards and 4 touchdowns. Libak led the receivers with 5 receptions for 119 yards and the leading rusher was Cossette with 105 yards on 27 attempts.
