Spartans Drop 4 Straight to Cyclones to End Regular Season

The M State baseball team ended their regular season schedule with 4 straight losses to St. Cloud Technical and Community College.  The Cyclones won twice on Friday in Fergus Falls, posting wins of 16-3 and 24-3, and then took a pair of Saturday home games by scores of 13-6 and 8—0.

 

In Friday’s opener, Griffin Dosan homered and drove in four runs to lead the Cyclones.  Brock Woitalla (3-4, 2 2B, HR, 2RBI, 3R), Max Reis (2-2, 3RBI, 2R, 3SB) and Jake Ince (2-3, 2B, RBI, 2R, SB) also contributed at the plate.  Hayden Frank (6IP, 4H, 3R, 1ER, 1BB, 8K) went the distance to earn the victory on the mound.

Leaders for M State were Eoghan Fisher (2-3, 2R), Connor Davis (1-3, R, 2B, SB) and Logan Pulju (2RBI, SF).

St. Cloud collected 20 hits in the second game on Friday and broke the game open with 13 runs in the fifth inning.  The Cyclones were led by Ince (3-4, 2B, 3RBI, 2R, SB), Brock Woitalla (2-4, 2RBI, 3R, SB), Elian Mezquita (2-3, 2RBI, 2R), Landon Janzen (2-5, 2R), Max Reis (1-1, RBI, 4R, SB), Hayden Frank (4-4, HR, 5RBI, 4R), Reece Berberich (3-4, 2RBI, 3R) and Griffin Dosan (1-3, 2B, 2RBI, 2R).

For the Spartans, Isaac Hamann (2-3, 3B, HR, RBI, R), Pulju (2-2, 2B), Carson Bevill (1-3, HR, 2RBI, R) and Eoghan Fisher (1-3, 2B) were the offensive leaders.

The first game Saturday was tied at 5-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, however, St. Cloud put 8 runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth to take control of the game.  Ince (3-4, 4RBI, R), Woitalla (2-4, 2R), Alejandro Diaz (1-5, 4RBI, R), Berberich (1-2, 2RBI, 2R), Will VanBeck (1-4, 2R) and Mezquita (0-1, RBI, 2R) were the offensive leaders.

Top hitters for M State were Bryce Kruger (3-4, 2B, 3B, 2RBI, R), Pulju (2-4, RBI, R), Davis (2-3, RBI, R), Evan Lunde (1-3, RBI, R, SF) and Hamann (1-2, RBI, SF).

In the final game of the weekend, four St. Cloud pitchers combined to 2-hit the Spartans, recording 12 strikeouts in the process.  Ben Monson and Hamann each had a double for the only two M State hits.  St. Cloud was led at the plate by Ince (2-3, RBI, 2R), Dosan (1-2, 3B, SB, 2R), Reis (1-2, RBI, R, SB), VanBeck (1-2, RBI, R), Woitalla (1-4, R), Sam Holthaus (1-3, RBI) and Alejandro Diaz (1-2, 2RBI, SF).
