The Menahga Braves hosted the Hawley Nuggets this afternoon with cool, cloudy, and windy conditions. In a tightly contested ballgame, the Braves rode the arm of Alex Salmen to a 2-0 victory.

Salmen (7IP, 4H, 0R, 0ER, 2BB, 2HB, 5K’s) picked up the shutout win for the Braves and led their offense with a pair of hits. Tommy Slette (6IP, 5H, 2R, 1ER, 1BB, 1HB, 6K) was the losing pitcher for the Nuggets, tossing a complete game. The Nuggets left eight runners on base.

Menahga plated a run in the bottom of the 1st on a pair of stolen bases and an error on a throw down to 3rd base to take a 1-0 lead. Hawley would load the bases in the top of the 3rd, and have two runners on base in the top of the 4th, but failed to score. The Braves scored an unearned in the 4th on a one out error, a single, and an RBI ground out for the only other run of the game. The Nuggets threatened again in the 5th with runners on the corners with two outs, but a successful pick off attempt snuffed out the threat. After leaving a runner on 3rd in the 6th, the Nuggets went down 1-2-3 in the 7th as the Braves held to the 2-0 victory.

“Credit the Braves for a gritty win tonight,” Hawley Head Coach Beau Lofgren said. “Salmen didn’t strike us out too many times, but he picked up big K’s when he needed to with solid defense behind him. Slette suffered another tough defeat in a game he deserved to win. We need to be better at cashing in on opportunities with runners on base. We will be back to work next week.”

Hawley (4-5) takes on Park Rapids next Tuesday. Menahga (4-4) has won four straight games and travels to Parkers Prairie next Tuesday as well.
