The West Central Area softball team swept Montevideo in a double header on Thursday, posting wins of 17-1 and 23-0.  “With 35 mile per hour wind gusts, we had to work really hard on keeping our feet moving,” stated WCA Head Coach Vanessa McNamara.  “As soon as we walked outside and realized the wind was blowing in from left field, we changed our warm-ups.  We took foam golf ball, threw them in the air and practiced moving our feet.  We also talked through fly balls and what that was going to look like as base runners.  It was a dynamic in our game that we definitely had to prepare for.”

The lady Knights collected 29 hits on the night with 4 triples, 6 doubles and 19 singles.  Lily Mahoney struck out 12 batters, 6 in each game.  Mahoney allowed only one hit in the opener and tossed a no-hitter in the nightcap.

Addison Staples was tough as nails behind the plate,” noted Coach McNamara. “We, as coaches, were impressed with catchers from both teams as they had to stay in position with the wind and sand blowing in their face the entire night.  Mya Foslien and Madison Fagre had excellent defensive nights.  Nora Anderson’s hitting was on fire and Sophie Sanstead was clutch in the box tonight.  Our senior leadership was strong from Alaina Sykora and Zoey Fuhrman as they kept the field talking and the dugout loud as it was so hard to hear with the wind.”

McNamara concluded, “Overall, this was a huge team effort to win. Every person contributed and as coaches we couldn’t ask for more.  Also, a huge shout out to our fans for facing the elements this spring.  They are amazing and appreciated!”
