Freshman Traeton Nelson of the Ashby/Brandon-Evansville boys’ golf team won the individual title on Thursday at the Quad County Conference meet hosted by Underwood at Balmoral Golf Course.  It was a day that featured bluster winds and the roller coaster of emotions that come with golf in these conditions,” said Bolts Head Coach Josh Lang.

Nelson shot a 75, good for a 2-shot victory.  “Traeton maintained his composure, making gritty up an downs on the home stretch,” noted Lang.  “Even more impressive was his mental toughness and maturity, learning the value of par, which cannot be understated when playing high school tournament golf.  He made 13 pars, 5 bogeys, and an eagle on the 6th hole, a short par 4 where he drove the green and buried a 15-footer for a two.  Last year in this event, I chewed him out on the 18th fairway for a bad attitude in the face of adversity and couldn’t be more proud of how he’s grown.”

Also competing for the Bolts were Justin Brandstad, Breckin Zwilling, Jaxon Schmidt, Zach Crane, and Bryce Kramer.  “They continue to impress with effort and positivity at practice, combining to shoot a season best 407 as a team,” added Coach Lang.  “Brandstad, an 8th- grader, highlighted the accomplishment with a 93, a personal best by 6 shots.”

Veronica Johnson, Kolby Bitzan, and Lily Topel competed for the girls’ team.  Johnson, a junior, handled the wind and the trees well, shooting a 49 on the back nine for a 106 total that beat her personal best by 4 shots.  “Veronica handled the wind and the trees well,” stated Lang.  “Kolby and Lily continue to work and grow, and we’re especially pleased with her poise.  The wind and trees made for a challenging day.”

The Junior Varsity saw their first action of the year at Stalker Lake Golf Club for a 9-hole meet which was also hosted by Underwood.  Emma Gaalswyk and Nest Svetrong played their first round of golf, and Serenity Peterson competed for the girls as well.  Brody Bitzan, Maddex Wagner, Beckett Smith, and Ian Bitzan teed it up for the boys’ squad.
