The Hawley Nuggets and Breckenridge Cowboys battled each other amid very windy conditions at the Rodeo Grounds on Thursday. The Cowboys won 5-2 in 8-innings in the opener while the Nuggets took the nightcap 10-7.

A pitcher's duel took center stage for the bulk of game one. Trey Vogelbacher of Breckenridge and Hawley's Tommy Slette held each team scoreless through the first five innings. Hawley plated the game's first run in the bottom of the 6th. Hayden Rux's sacrifice fly to center scored Dillon Hoekstra, giving Hawley a slim 1-0 lead through six innings. With two outs, a runner on third, and a 1-2 count, pinch hitter Quenton Lugert doubled to right, scoring Jaxon Riggs to tie it up at 1-1. Next, Gavin Hoffert's batted ball was dropped in right field to score Logan Church to put the Cowboys ahead 2-1. Hawley tied the game in the bottom of the 7th when Slette scored on a wild pitch. The Cowboys scored three runs in the 8th en route to a 5-2 extra-inning win. Vogelbacher (6IP, 4H, 1ER, 4BB, 2HB, 5K's) and Logan Church (2IP, 0ER, 0H, 1HB, 2K) split the pitching duties with Church earning the win in relief. Slette (6 2/3IP, 3H, 1ER, 2BB, 1HB, 10K's) and Aiden Eilertson (1 1/3 IP, 1H, 3ER, 4BB, 2HP, 1K) combined efforts for Hawley on the mound with Eliertson taking the loss. The Nuggets left 10 runners on base while the Cowboys stranded nine. "Slette and Vogelbacher did a tremendous job pitching," Hawley coach Beau Lofgren said. "Our inability to get bunts down in key situations and an untimely error in the 7th made this loss sting a bit. Credit the Cowboys for their grit late in the game."

The Nuggets used an 8-run first inning to post a 10-7 win in the back end of the double header. Eli Strawsell (3-4, 2 RBI) and Cael Kosmatka (3-4, RBI) led the Hawley offense. Riley Kappes (2-3, RBI) and Jaxson Lopez (1-2, 3 runs scored) were key contributors for Breckenridge. Brody Hadley (6IP, 6H, 4ER, 4BB, 3K) earned his first varsity win for the Nuggets. Church took the loss for Breckenridge. "We were able to take advantage of walks and defensive miscues to get a big lead early," Lofgren said. "Outside of one rough inning, Hadley threw well and kept his composure when we had some errors in the field. That wind was brutal today. I'm proud of our guys for sticking together."

Hawley (3-4, 2-4 HOL) takes on Staples-Motley next Thursday in Hawley.  Breckenridge (2-5, 1-3 HOL) travels to Barnesville for a double header next Tuesday.
