It was a clean sweep for the Otter baseball teams on a blustery Thursday afternoon.  All three levels came out on top against the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm.  The 9th grade team won 16-1, the JV squad posted a 6-4 victory and the Fergus Falls varsity edged the Storm, 8-7.

The varsity game was a battle with Fergus Falls jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a lead-off walk issued to Logan Larson and singles from Carston Fronning, Hunter Powers and Leighton Buckmeier led to 3 runs.

The Storm battled back in the top of the 2nd and scored 4 runs, stemming from 5 walks and 2 Otter errors.
Fergus Falls came up with 3 more runs in the bottom half of the inning as the Storm committed 3 errors of their own.

Henry Bethel came on in relief of Larson in the top of the third and pitched 3 scoreless frames before yielding an unearned run in the 6th.  The Otters added single runs in the 5th and 6th innings and they were able to hold off a late 7th inning surge by the Storm, earning their first victory of the season.

Bethel got his first win and Powers picked up the save.  Buckmeier led all hitters, going 3-for-3 at the plate in a 6-hit attack.

“The elements certainly played into the game as both teams battled cold temps and high winds,” stated Head Coach Shane Thielke of Fergus Falls.

The Otters will now face Minnewaska Area High School on Friday in a game to be played at Gustavus Adolphus College.
