Walk-Off Double by Pulju Lifts Spartans to Double Header Split

M State hosted Minnesota North College – Rainy River on Wednesday and the two teams played a pair of one-run games as they split a double header in Fergus Falls.  The Voyageurs won the opening game, 8-7, and the Spartans took the nightcap, 6-5 when Logan Pulju walked them off with a 2-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning.

 

The Spartans lost the first game despite out-hitting the Voyageurs nine to eight.  Isaac Hamann and Eoghan Fisher each collected three hits for M State.  Hamann doubled in the first inning, singled in the third inning, and doubled in the sixth inning, finishing 3-for-3 at the plate with one run batted in and 2 runs scored.  Fisher was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.  Connor Davis also drove in a pair of runs.  Ben Monson pitched three and two-thirds innings of relief for M State, allowing 3 hits and no runs, while striking out three and walking two.  Starting pitcher Peyton Christensen took the loss.

Kaleb Hubble earned the victory for Rainy River, giving up eight hits and five runs over five innings, striking out five and walking two.  The Voyageurs turned 3 double plays in the field and did not commit an error.  Mathias Talarico led the offensive effort with 3 runs batted in, going 2-for-4 at the plate.  Bradie Black had a triple, drew 3 walks and scored 3 times.

Game two leaders for M State were Davis (2-3, 2B, HR, 4RBI, R), Pulju (2-3, 2B, 2RBI, 2R), Fisher (2-3, 2R) and Hamann (1-4, R).  Carson Bevill (2IP, 4H, R, 3K) opened the game on the mound and Evan Lunde (2IP, H, 0R, 2K, 1BB) earned the win.  Monson pitched three innings in relief.  The lefty gave up four hits and four runs, only one of which was earned.

Rainy River was led by Domingo Olmedo (2-4, R), Ian Becker (1-3, HR, RBI, 2R), Josh Johnson (2-3), Alex Levkov (1-3, RBI) and Austin Jackson-Anderson (2-3, SB).

The Spartans will play two games at Ridgewater College in Willmar on Saturday and will host the Warriors in a Sunday double header in Fergus Falls.
