The Ashby/Brandon/Evansville golf teams competed in their first meet of the year on Monday at Tipsinah Mounds in the WCA Quad County Conference opener.  The boys team brought a full roster of 6 golfers who were led by freshman Traeton Nelson's 3rd place finish with a score of 78 in tough, windy conditions.  Justin Brandstad returned this year as an 8th grader, firing a 103, while the rest of the team consisted of sophomores Breckin Zwilling, Bryce Kramer, Ian Bitzan, and Zach Crane.  The sophomores are all new to the team and new to 18 hole competitive golf.

On the girls side, we had 3 sophomores and a junior on the roster who showed that hard work pays off.  Kolby Bitzan led the way with a 102, good for 7th place and a personal best.  Lilly Topel finished in 11th, with a 110, also a personal best.  Veronica Johnson was 2 shots behind Lily with a 112, which was impressive as she's been available to practice only a few days so far.  Shooting a 124 was Serenity Peterson, who finished 23rd.  Both Serenity and Veronica were 2 shots off their career bests, all positives and all about having fun and getting better.

I couldn't be more impressed by the attitudes and work ethic so far and am excited to watch these students improve.  That couldn't be more true for all the members of our young team, a roster that's grown from 7 golfers last year to 20 this spring.
