The Hawley Nuggets and DGF Rebels both opened their 2024 seasons with a Heart O'Lakes Conference double-header at the Rodeo Grounds in Hawley Thursday. When the dust settled, both teams left with a split.  DGF won 7-2 in the opener and then Hawley came from behind in game two to record a 7-4 win.

In the opener, DGF used a five-run second inning to take a hefty lead early en route to a 7-2 victory. Landon Johnson, Adam Moe, and Dylan Anderson split the pitching duties for the Rebels with Anderson earning the win. Cayson Bergee went 3-3 with an RBI while Jack Haugen went 2-3 with 2 RBI to pace the Rebels' offense. The Rebels also turned three double plays in the ballgame. Cael Kostmatka and Jayden Ambuehl pitched for the Nuggets with Kostmatka taking the loss. Five different Nuggets had one hit apiece as Hawley stranded ten runners on the base paths.

The Nuggets dug itself out of an early 3-0 deficit to take the nightcap with a 7-4 win. Tommy Slette went 6 2/3 innings on the mound for Hawley to pick up the victory, notching nine strikeouts while allowing three hits and one earned run. Brody Hadley came out of the bullpen to pick up the save in the bottom of the 7th with the tying run at the plate. Aiden Eilertson and Wyatt Jegtvig each had a pair of hits to aid in the Nuggets' offense. Austin Anderson, Payton Aas, and Brody O'Keefe pitched for the Rebels with O'Keefe saddled with the loss. Alex Anderson went 2-3 with an RBI for DGF.

"This was a pretty solid season-opening day of baseball, all things considered," Hawley head coach Beau Lofgren commented. "I am extremely proud of our team. We had some costly miscues, but the boys turned the page, continued to battle, and made plays down the stretch. DGF is such a quality program. They'll be a tough team to beat for anyone they play. To be out this early playing games compared to what we've dealt with the last couple of springs is certainly a treat."

Both the Nuggets and Rebels are 1-1 in the HOL and overall. Hawley will travel to Lake Park-Audubon next Tuesday while DGF hosts Park Rapids tomorrow in Dilworth.
