Pelican Rapids posted a pair of one-run victories in high school softball action on Thursday, beating Breckenridge 8-7 and 10-9 in eight innings.

“In the first game we showed a lot of grit and determination by battling back from a 6-0 hole early in the game,” stated Head Coach Derrick Nelson of the Vikings.  “Zayli Arrow (7IP, 7K, 5ER) settled down after the second inning and gave us an opportunity to chip away and get back in the game.  Hazel Haugrud (2-5, RBI, R) had the game winning hit to score Kolbi Ross (1-4, R) in the bottom of the 7th inning.”

Other hitting leaders in the first game were Chelsey Blakeway (2-3, 2R, BB), Zayla Arrow (2-4, 3RBI), Zayli Arrow (2-4, RBI), Claudia Gurath (1-4, 2R, 2RBI) and Arianna Villagomez (2-4).

“The second game we jumped out to the early lead and then was able to pull out the victory in extra innings,” said Coach Nelson.  “Zayla Arrow (8IP, 15K, 5ER) struck out 15 batters and came up with some big strike outs late in the game.  Arianna Villagomez (2-5, 2R) made a great defensive play in the bottom of the 8th to help keep BW to only one run in the inning.  Hazel Haugrud (2-5, 2R, 2RBI, BB) again came through with a base hit scoring two runs in the top of the 8th for Pelican Rapids.”

Zayli Arrow (2-4, 2R, RBI), Linea Thomas (4-5, RBI, R), Miren Thomas (2-5, R) and Claudia Gurath (1-4, 2RBI, R) were the offensive leaders for the Vikings in game two.
