The M State Lady Spartan softball team turned in their best performance of the young season in game one of a double header against the Ridgewater College Warriors on Wednesday, winning the game 9-7. Ridgewater took the nightcap by a score of 22-9.

In game one, the Lady Spartans took a 2-1 lead after one inning and never looked back.  Kaylee Flom turned in a great pitching performance, Kaisa Jones cracked two home runs and first baseman Kaleigh Sip snagged a hot line drive to kill a Warrior rally. All three are graduates of Ada high school. Flom pitched a strong 7 inning, striking out five batters and many in key situations. The Lady Spartans led 5-2 in the top of the third inning, but Ridgewater had scored one run and was threatening with two outs. The Ridgewater hitter hit a hard line drive that was headed for the right field corner but Sip lunged to her left, caught the ball and ended the rally. Jones led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run and Alivia Haas hit a clutch two out double to score two more and give the Lady Spartans an 8-3 lead. Jones led of the top of the sixth with another solo homer, giving the Lady Spartans a 9-3 lead.

A couple of defensive mistakes by the Lady Spartans gave life to the Warriors and they battled back to make the score 9-7. With the tying run standing on second, Flom threw a couple of great pitches to get the final outs and seal the 9-7 win.

Sydney Schaefer added two hits and two runs scored and Kaleigh Peterson had three runs batted in.

In game two, the Lady Spartans were not as sharp and fell behind 10-4 heading onto the bottom half of the fourth inning. The Lady Spartans rallied for four runs behind RBIs by Jones and Maisy Hoefer to make the score 10-8, but they could not find the clutch hit and left two runners in scoring position. It was all Ridgewater after that as the pitching for the Lady Spartans tired and the defense made some mistakes allowing the score to get out of hand.

The Lady Spartans will play at home Saturday against Rochester Community and Technical College. Game times are 12:00 and 2:00.
