Gavin Pausch (6IP, 4H, 4K, 0BB, 0R) and Lane Dilly (1IP, 0H, 0BB, 0R, 2K) combined on a 4-hit shutout Tuesday as the Ottertail Central Bulldogs opened their season with a 1-0 win over Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale.  OTC scored the only run of the game in the second inning when Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale pitcher Braylin Deleon (3IP, 1R, 4H, 3K, 2BB) induced Eric Fick to hit into a fielder’s choice, but Lane Dilly was able to score on the play.

Head Coach for the Bulldogs, Ryan Hendrickson, had a lot of good things to say about how his team played on the night, “what a beautiful night for ball!  Gavin led us on the mound.  I wasn’t too sure how long to let him go on his first outing, but the kid just kept getting stronger as the game went on.  He gave us 6 outstanding innings and let the Bulldog Dilly close it out.  Lane also looked great as he saw the minimum of 3 batters and struck out two of them to pick up the save.  It was great to see our defense play flawlessly tonight.  We have not taken a whole lot of reps outside yet this sprint, but their years of summer ball and experience through past spring seasons have helped tremendously.  Our defense was on point, like we haven’t missed a step.  Offensively, we were a little slow, but that is to be expected at this point.  The first win is huge for a lot of reasons.  I like where we are at.”

Pausch led the Bulldogs with two hits in three at bats and he and Dilly each stole a pair of bases.  Dilly was 1-for-1 at the plate with a pair of walks.  Soren Floden (1-3) and Owen Harig (1-3) collected the other hits for OTC.

Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale was led by Shawn Schmitz (2-3) and Jalen Hinzmann (2-2).

The Bulldogs will play a game at New York Mills on Thursday.
