The 2023 track and field season will certainly be one to remember for the Frazee Hornets and their fans.  The girls’ team was second in both sub-section and Section 6A team competition, setting school records in the 4x800 (10:10.22) and 4x400 (4:04.83, 4th in the state) relay events.  Team members were Brynn Larson, Elsie Ratz, Jayden Sonnenberg and Hailey Selly for both relay races.  Larson also competed at state in the high jump and Elsie Ratz set a new school record in the 800 (2:24.19).  Brady Crabtree established a new school record in the boys’ pole vault (13’0”), finishing fifth in the state.

Returning letter winners for the girls’ are seniors Elsie Ratz (mid distance, relays), Hailey Selly (Relays, sprints, triple jump), and sophomores Brynn Larson (high jump, relays, sprints) and Jayden Sonnenberg (sprints, relays, high jump, triple jump).

Boys returning include seniors Brady Crabtree (pole vault, sprints), Brady Borah (middle distance) and Alex Helmers (sprinits, mid distance), and sophomores Tyden Schaefer (pole vault) and Jonah Sharp (distance).  Junior Carter Sonnenberg is also expected to step into an increased varsity role.

“We have some good numbers and are excited for the season,” commented Head coach Jim Jacobson, now in his 14th season.  “On the girls’ side, we have a lot of our leaders and our school record relays back for another season.  We had a great finish at the state meet last year and have had a few great days of practice.  We are optimistic about a great season with good weather that has allowed us to do more in practice.  Plus, we finally have a practice facility, as our new football/track complex was finished last fall.  On the boys’ side, we have a lot of youth and excitement, as well as some state participants returning.”

Jim Rader, Russ Hackel, Todd Larson, Jeff Johannsen (Volunteer) and Daniel Stiel (Junior High) will be assisting Jacobson.

Pillager and Pelican Rapids are Jacobson’s picks as the top teams in Section 6A with the Vikings the team to beat in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference.
