Viking Boys Fall to Third-Seeded Lake City in Overtime at Target Center

Hunter Lorenson made a pair of free throws with 12 seconds remaining in regulation to pull Lake City into a 60-60 tie with Pelican Rapids in the 8AA quarterfinal round game at Target Center on Wednesday night.  A Pelican Rapids turnover with just 6 seconds remaining led to a missed shot for the Tigers, sending the game to overtime.  With senior guard Timmy Guler having fouled out in the final 20 seconds of regulation, the Vikings struggled to get anything going in overtime as Lake City out-scored them 12-1 and posted a 72-61 victory.

 

Lake City led 25-23 at the half, but Pelican Rapids scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 31-25 lead.  The Tigers responded by going on a 6-point run of their own to tie the game at 31-31.  The Vikings scored the next six points for a 37-31 lead, however, Lake City kept it close the rest of the way with the game experienced 9 ties and 5 lead changes.

Lorenson led Lake City with 19 points and two members of the Tigers, Keegan Ryan (14 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals) and Rylee Fick (10 points, 16 rebounds, 3 blocks) registered double-doubles.  Jaden Shones finished with 15 points and a team high 5 assists.  Lake City held a 41-30 edge on the boards, blocked 8 shots, and force 18 Pelican Rapids turnovers.  The Tigers also went 19-for-26 on the free throw line, but shot only 10% (1-10) from 3-point range.  They hit 45.6% (26-57) of their overall field goal attempts.

Pelican Rapids only shot 7 free throws, making just two.  The Vikings heated up from 3-point land in the second half, making 7-of-9 from beyond the arc in the second half and finishing 7-of-16 for 43.8%).  Overall they made 44% (26-59) of their field goal attempts.  Timmy Guler (18 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) led the Vikings in scoring.  He was joined in double figures by Miguel Torres (14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists) and Charlie Larson (11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists).  Grady Larson had 9 points and led the team with 6 rebounds.

Pelican Rapids goes to 24-6 with the loss.  They will play a consolation semifinal game at 8:00pm Thursday at Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia University in St. Paul.

Third-seeded Lake City will now meet second-seeded Albany at 8:00pm Friday at Williams Arena in a championship semifinal contest.  The Huskies defeated Jackson County Central, 87-66, in their quarterfinal round game.
