Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart hit 58% (15-26) of their 3-point field goal attempts and shot 46% overall in their 66-49 victory over Underwood in the Class A third place game at the Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia University in St. Paul. The Mustangs got off to a fast start as they scored the first 11 points of the game, however, the Rockets battled back to tie the game at 17-17. Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart went on a 16-2 run to end the first half with a 33-19 lead. The Rockets could get no closer than 12 points the rest of the game.
Lily Hubin (23 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists) and Ellaina Bergstrom (16 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals) each made four 3’s, while Rachel Kottke (11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) and Elizabeth Ovitt (9 points) had 3 made 3’s apiece. Kristi Kottke had a team high 8 assists, while scoring 7 points and securing 4 rebounds. Jamie Novotny led the Mustangs with 10 rebounds and Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart held a slim 33-29 edge on the boards. They also scored 16 points off 15 Underwood turnovers.
The Rockets shot just 32% (17-53) on the day and made 9-of-25 (36%) 3’s in the game. They were led by Liz Lukken (20 points) and Kallyn Grove (17 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks). Ezrah Baker had a great all-around game, scoring 8 points, pulling down 8 rebounds, dishing out 5 assists and coming away with 4 steals. Trinity Baker added 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Underwood ends their season with a 28-5 record. Seniors Liz Lukken and Ezrah Baker were a part of 4 varsity teams that had a record of 115-24 through their four seasons, with back-to-back state tournament experiences.
