The Underwood girls’ basketball team held a 20-13 lead with 7:38 left in the first half of their championship semifinal game with top-ranked Goodhue in the Class A State Tournament on Friday at Williams Arena. It was at that point where the Wildcats went on a 16-0 run to take a 29-22 lead on the way to a 63-53 victory over the Rockets. Underwood cut the lead to 41-37 with 10:48 remaining in the game, but could get no closer.
Neither team shot the ball well as the Rockets hit only 37% (20-54) of their field goal attempts and just 4-of-15 (26.7%) three-pointers, while the Wildcats shot 34.9% (22-63), making only 3-18 (16.7%) from 3-point range. Goodhue took excellent care of the ball, turning it over only 8 times, while the Rockets had 15 turnovers on the day.
Elizabeth Gadient registered a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Wildcats. She also contributed 7 assists and 3 steals, while making 11-of-12 free throws. Kendyl Lodenmeier also had a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. She came up with 4 steals and dished out 3 assists. Natalie Thomforde added 9 points.
Liz Lukken (24 points, 9 rebounds), Mily Albjerg (13 points, 8 rebounds), Kallyn Grove (7 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists) and Ezrah Baker (5 points, 9 rebounds) were the leaders for Underwood.
Underwood (28-4) had their ten game winning streak snapped. They will play for third place in the Class A State Tournament at 10:00am Saturday at Gangelhoff Center at Concordia University in St. Paul. Their opponent, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart lost their semifinal round contest to Mountain Iron-Buhl, 69-50.
